"My favorite story is "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" and my favorite poem is Annabel Lee. The story is my favorite because I remember my parents reading that to me when I was little and I loved how suspenseful it was. Annabel Lee is my favorite poem because I understand how heartbroken and angry Poe must've felt at the time he was writing that poem, and I feel the poem has it's secret ways of expressing his feelings through it."

Poe's main character in "Murders in the Rue Morgue" is considered the first detective in fiction and inspired Arthur Conan Doyle to write Sherlock Holmes, 50 years later!

Poe read a LOT. I think he read everything he could get his hands on. But his ideas were also very original. People at the time were not writing horror stories. Poe invented the first detective character that solved crimes by investigation and deduction. He created entirely new genres of fiction.

In the prose he wrote, people found meaning. And the meaning may not be the intended one, but it was the one that needed to be heard. I believe it. Numerous examples of screenplays only pulling together after twenty or more rewrites (sixth sense etc)- way ahead of his time."

Yes, it has evolved through the years. The original site didn't work on phones because no one was loading web sites on their phones. The comments and these guestbook entries have evolved as well.

It's a style. Some call it "goth", short for "gothic". But for me, it's not about a label. It's about seeing the duality in nature- the beauty in darkness. You can see this dualism everywhere- it's there in Beauty and the Beast, a fairy take written by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740, almost 70 years before Poe was born.

"My favorite story of his is currently the black cat. During Medieval times, black cats were associated with witchcraft. Witches that were burned at the stake had their cats tossed into the flames with them. The only exception was the white patch on some of their chests. They believed that if a black cat had a white patch of fur on its chest, it couldn't be possessed. They thought it to be a representation of holiness, calling it an angels kiss. I find it interesting that in Poe's story, the first fully black cat died, and the second cat, the one with the angel's kiss, was spared by the wife."

Yes, I agree! Hardly anyone knows Poe created the character that would later be copied many times. Poe's detective even helped solve a real crime with his story The Mystery of Marie Roget! See the notes I added at the end.

"My favorite book by Edgar Allan Poe is the Raven because it had meanings behind the story and I was interested when the Raven kept saying nevermore and that curious-me because what does nevermore mean and it was a really connected story to some people because in this story Poe was remembering Lenore and he thinks he can't forget about her and that is what some people think to and I was interested in the Raven because the Raven was smart and I was surprised by the Raven because some bird types they don't talk and they would go out of the house next day but the Raven stayed and said nevermore"

"Edgar Allan Poe was a mysterious poet. He wrote about fifteen horror stories in his life. I feel Poe's use of words in his poems really opens the reader's mind. His use of figurative language in his poems creates a visual in the reader's mind. This makes the reader wanting to read on to find out what will happen in the next episode. One possible reason Poe writes so well is due to his life he had as a child."

Poe wrote HUNDREDS of stories during his lifetime. I've picked out my favorites for this web site, and I'll add more over time. It takes time to add each story. I have to pick out all of the vocabulary words and type in the definitions for each one.

"I'm honestly not into poets or anything like that. But I could say I slightly look up to Poe because I like the genre of his work. I like murder and mystery type things so overall I could say that I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Although I don't like web quests. "I personally think that Edgar Allan Poe was an okay author. I am not really into the Gothic Horror genre, so I will probably not be a credible source, but nevertheless, it was mediocre. For back then when this genre was new, it was probably the bee's knees, but now it is the same stuff the emo kid in the corner of a middle school could come up with. I know that back when this was new, I would have loved his stories, but now, they are kind of tropey."

It's true some of Poe's themes have been used over and over by many writers since Poe's day. But Poe wrote a LOT more than "Gothic Horror". Take a look at the summaries page and pick out a story that is not in the horror genre.

I don't think Poe gets enough credit as a writer; his works are so varied and all are immersive and clever.
